Organic Food – it is good for you and the environment

There are many reasons why one should go organic, but the most important reason is that organic food is good for your health and the environment. Organic food promotes a non-toxic environment for all living things. This is because in the production of organic food, no pesticides and insecticides are used. To keep insects and pests at bay, farmers who grow organic vegetables and fruits release snakes into the farms. This way, vegetables and fruits are not harmed by pests and consumers get to consume fresh fruits and vegetables that are not contaminated by pesticides.

Fruits and vegetables that are grown the conventional way are prone to having pesticide residues. Children are susceptible to the effects of pesticide exposure because they are unable to detoxify toxic chemicals. This leads to health problems in children, including autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. So, by eliminating pesticides while farming, we can protect our children from harmful ailments.

Studies have shown that farmers involved in organic farming are healthier than those involved in conventional farming. This is because those who carry out conventional farming are exposed to toxic chemicals and are at risk of contracting cancer. In addition, both consumers and farmers are at risk of food poisoning if fruits and vegetables are not cleaned properly before consumption. This is the reason why many people are turning to organic fruits and vegetables.

Apart from organic food being harmless to humans, it is also harmless to the environment. In many agricultural areas, where conventional farming is carried out, there is a high possibility of pesticides and insecticides seeping into the soil and entering water systems. These pesticides contaminate water bodies such as lakes and rivers. And once fish and other marine animals consume water that is contaminated with pesticides, they die instantly.

It is evident that organic food is not just good for human beings but also for the environment. Organic food production also helps reduce global warming. Since most organic food is distributed locally, less energy is used for transportation, and this automatically reduces carbon dioxide emissions, a major contributor to global warming. Also, organic farming utilises 30 percent less energy than conventional farming and produces close to 60 percent less carbon dioxide. Since organically farmed soil holds more carbon and water than normal soil, organic farming is considered more environmental friendly than conventional farming. In fact, our ancient Indian culture also shows that people used organic methods of farming before chemicals and fertilizers were introduced. Hence, it makes sense to go back to our roots.
